Unified Culture of Excellence

At Nathan Hale-Ray Middle School, we embrace East Haddam’s vision as a district of distinction where educators prioritize student success, family outreach, and accountable collective efficacy. Across grades 4–8, Nathan Hale-Ray Middle School fosters a culture of excellence grounded in innovation and inclusion. Signature programs such as Noisemakers, Best Buddies, PE, Library, Art, Health, STEM, Project Lead the Way (PLTW), STEM and band empower students to lead with empathy and purpose.

Our academic focus is built on Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC), our BTC cohort and partnership, and restorative practices, fostering a dynamic learning community where communication thrives, rigorous instruction is the norm, and students develop passions, knowledge, and civic-mindedness. Through Interim Assessment Blocks (IABs) and Interim Comprehensive Assessments (ICAs), we use data-driven insights to ensure all students are challenged, supported, and given the opportunity to reach their full potential. Rooted in the Circle of Courage, we reject ceilings, embrace the power of "not yet," and cultivate an equitable environment where every student feels valued, empowered, and inspired to persist through adversity.

Building Thinking Classroom

At Nathan Hale-Ray Middle School, we are committed to fostering student-centered, deep-thinking classrooms through the Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) framework. Our multi-year plan ensures a thoughtful and sustainable implementation, allowing teachers to explore, refine, and integrate BTC strategies effectively.

This year, Science and Math teachers (Grades 5-8) will use professional development (PD) time to explore BTC strategies, supported by peer observations and BTC partnerships, allowing teachers to visit and learn from one another. A team also visited a local middle school to gain insights into BTC in action. Meanwhile, ELA, Social Studies, and 4th-grade teachers will work with Ms. Mackenzie to integrate vocabulary and reading comprehension strategies aligned with BTC principles.

Next year, Science and Math teachers will integrate at least one BTC component per unit, while Grades 4-8 non-math/science teachers will explore non-curricular thinking tasks and Vertical Non-Permanent Surfaces (VNPS). Peer observations will expand, with teachers visiting classrooms to refine BTC practices and strengthen student engagement.

Through collaboration, professional development, and hands-on implementation, BTC will continue to enhance student problem-solving, critical thinking, and engagement across all disciplines.
